Teaching and measuring critical thinking in intro physics labs

Abstract: The goals of lab courses have been highly debated for decades with not much research to back up any position. We have been developing and studying a new pedagogy for intro physics labs that uses experimentation to teach critical thinking. In this talk, I will describe our critical thinking instruction, and how we are measuring critical thinking. I will also outline some of our new work looking into the mechanisms and features of this instruction, including the balance between structure and agency, overcoming students’ confirmation bias, and collaborative participation and issues of equity.
